3rd Mt Apo Boulder Face Challenge

3rd Mt Apo Boulder Face Challenge invites mountaineers, nature enthusiasts

by Christy Carole Sanico

Davao City (17 April) -- Mountaineers and nature enthusiasts all over the Philippines are invited to join the 3rd Mt. Apo Boulder Face Challenge on April 29-30, 2010 in Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur.

The challenge would be to trek along Mt. Apo and take part in activities on conserving the nature.

This 24-hour challenge is open to all physically fit individuals, 18 years old above. Interested individuals should form a three-member team comprising of two mountaineers (1 male and 1 female) and a logistic crew.

"One main goal of this activity is to promote the region as an adventure tourism destination," said Engr. Albert Gabriel of Mountaineering Federation of SM, during yesterday's Kapihan sa PIA.

Gabriel stated that mountaineers will be taught on how to be responsible athletes through instilling in them outdoor ethics. Part of the program's core advocacy is to do clean-ups in some parts of Mt. Apo, he said.

He said that the participants will meet at Sta. Cruz beach lines at 10 o'clock in the morning on April 29. Hikers are to trail Mt. Apo through mountain biking, trekking, road running, and water tubing.

To join the challenge, a registration fee of P3,000 is required, which is inclusive of trekker' race jerseys, certificates, souvenir t-shirts and meals. The deadline for registration is on April 24, 2010.

The organizers will conduct a medical examination prior to the trek, to ensure the mountaineers' good health condition, Gabriel said.

Cash prizes await the winning teams. The champion team will receive P75,000; 1st runner-up, P50, 000; 2nd runner up, P30,000; consolation prizes for top 3 finishers will receive 6,000 each. The P100,000 cash prize will be sponsored by the Department of Tourism.

The participants will be given a briefing/orientation on the rules and regulations of the event on April 27 in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

"So far, there are 10 teams who already committed to join the hike but we are still open for others who are interested. We are limiting this trek up to 12-20 teams with 3 members each," Gabriel stated.

"Last year's boulder face challenge was a big success too. We included a 30% examination and 70% endurance on the criteria, but this year, we will have to implement 100% endurance among team players," he added.
